Abstract: the article presents a retrospective analysis of the concept of «global competence», which is changing our understanding of educational targets. Using the example of key plots from the history of this concept, the evolution of its content, various ways and contexts of use are studied, and trends in its development are determined. Special attention is paid to public and scientific discussions about global competence at the turn of the XX‒XXI centuries. The conclusion is made about the evolution of the content of the concept of «global competence», which was initially considered in the aspect of human capital development as a specific set of knowledge, skills and attitudes necessary for successful professional activity in the global economy, and then began to be studied in the context of solving global problems, ensuring sustainable development and supporting collective well-being, as a multidimensional value-a focused construct that includes the knowledge, skills, attitudes and values necessary to address current social, cultural, economic and environmental problems of global importance at the local level.
