Abstract: the article substantiates a comprehensive approach to solving the problem of preserving and improving the health status of the regional population through health-saving education and enlightenment. The results of an interdisciplinary solution of the specific problem of overcoming iodine deficiency in the Republic of Karelia which is similar with many regions of Russia are presented. Attention is drawn to the importance of the teacher's orientation to the creative addition of the content of the educational subject with valeological knowledge, skills, (in order to form the ideological foundations of the culture of students' health) as a component of health-saving education of school students. The data of the survey of students belonging to the risk group for iodine deficiency and parents of schoolchildren are presented, showing a low level of respondent awareness of the essence and prevention measures for iodine deficiency. The article provides information on the development and implementation of continuous health-saving education and enlightenment on the example of the prevention of iodine deficiency.
