Abstract: the article examines the scientific heritage and contribution done by Irina Trofimovna Suravegina (29.03.1930–02.01.2021) to the methodology, theory and methods of continuing environmental education. We describe the main research topics conducted by I. T. Suravegina and her followers related to the ideas of humanization and humanitarization of environmental education, and the ecologization of education in general. The article reveals the major areas and principles of environmental education as well as the formation of schoolchildren responsible attitude to nature and environmental culture, proved and implemented by I. T. Suravegina. The works of I. T. Suravegina and her students related to anthropo-ecological, socio-ecological and problem-oriented aspects of environmental education are considered. All together, these studies make up the theoretical and methodological basis of modern environmental education.
