Abstract: the article presents the results of the college students readiness level for independent academic activity the Republic of Karelia. The readiness for independent academic activity is viewed in the context of three components: motivational, cognitive and volitional. The tool that has been opted for this research is a questionnaire with three sections related to the aforementioned components. The article prioritizes the analysis of students motivational readiness and self-estimation of their general studying skills. The article reveals the major shortcomings in motivational and cognitive student readiness and suggests a number of methods to overcome the ones, such as: strengthening of efforts for career guidance among high school students; focusing on interactive teaching; developing a propaedeutic program aimed at overcoming the above-mentioned shortcomings through enhancing general studying skills.
