Abstract: the paper is aimed at identifying possible approaches to the development of the formation of environmental culture strategies for adults within the framework of environmental education. The results are based on the sociological research on the attitude to the environmental problems of the urban environment and evaluation of the readiness of the citizens to the solution of environmental problems in adult population of St. Petersburg conducted in 2018. The results of the study allow defining more accurate understanding of the role of age, psychological and pedagogical characteristics of different categories of the population for the meaningful and instrumental provision of environmental education. The conclusions of the paper have a pronounced applied nature and may be of interest to a wide range of readers.
