Abstract: the development of academic writing is one of the key areas in fostering students’ academic literacy; however, the extent to which relevant components are represented in contemporary English language textbooks for non-linguistic study programs remains insufficiently explored. The aim of this study was to design and pilot a content analysis matrix for English language textbooks as a tool for assessing their potential to develop students’ academic writing skills. The research was conducted on a sample of 16 English language textbooks for IT students, selected from the «Urait» electronic library system according to predetermined inclusion and exclusion criteria. None of the components studied was systematically implemented across the entire sample of textbooks. The developed content analysis matrix can be used as a tool for expert evaluation of English textbooks and the design of teaching and learning materials aimed at the consistent development of academic writing skills. The results indicate the need for a more complete integration of academic writing components into the content of modern textbooks for students majoring in non-linguistic majors.
