Abstract: with the digitalization of education and the rapid development of artificial intelligence technologies, traditional approaches to teaching academic writing are taking on a new direction. Scholars and practicing teachers are experimenting with various artificial intelligence tools to optimize the learning and writing process and increase the effectiveness of developing essential skills. The aim of this study is to analyze the evolution of these approaches through a systematic review (2014‒2025) of sources from journals indexed in the scientometric databases Scopus, Web of Science, eLIBRARY.ru, and Google Scholar. A comparative analysis revealed the advantages of traditional approaches (structured learning, mastering IMRaD conventions) and their limitations (routine, labor-intensive), as well as the strengths of modern technologies (personalization, feedback) amid the risks of «hallucinations», plagiarism, and ethical dilemmas. The results demonstrate a shift to integrating AI into teaching academic writing. The development of hybrid models integrating traditional and digital methods to improve the effectiveness of academic writing instruction is recognized as a promising direction.
