Abstract: the article discusses the interrelation of the development of the lifelong learning system and the region's economy on the example of the Russian Far East. The purpose of the article is to study the theoretical aspects of the role of universities in the conditions of the «digital economy» and the possibility of practical implementation of these provisions in modern conditions. A point of view is presented, supported by evidence, that universities, as training centers, play a key role in regional economic development. The analysis of the state of the education system in the Far East revealed problems that are holding back the development dynamic of the lifelong learning system in the macroregion. Considerable attention is paid to the characterization of the problems faced by the Far East as a region of strategic importance for the development of the country. Based on the results of the analysis, recommendations for the development of lifelong learning system in the Far East were developed, taking into account the successful experience of the Republic of Karelia. In addition, the mechanism of actualization of existing educational programs is proposed. This mechanism is an important element in the implementation of education continuity and obtaining of in-demand skills by employers.
